Last week in my Writing Across the Curriculum class, we had an
interesting discussion about slam poetry and how to teach and assess it
in a classroom. The readings and discussion made me fairly passionate
about seeking out an opportunity to teach slam poetry (or spoken word,
if you prefer) during my next practicum. But the question of ‘how’
remained a big one.
A quick internet search for “how to teach slam poetry” yielded the expected results: a lot of hits. The first that I bookmarked (although haven’t yet delved into) is below. I love that the author provides a number of classroom-appropriate examples of slam poetry (the majority of youtube clips would fall into the “not appropiate” category). That’s a great start for me. At the bottom of her post, she also links to other bloggers who talk about the “how” of teaching slam. I’m off and away!
